Chapter Thirty-Four

Keir wore my ass out. The guy pushed me hard and kept me talking for the rest of the class. The best part was that it helped - both the swordsmanship and the mental crap I was stuck on. And the more I told him, the more sweet words of wisdom he had. At one point, he mentioned that it didn't matter if I was straight, a lesbian, or something else. I was me, and liking someone wasn't ever guaranteed. Being straight didn't mean I'd be into every guy in the world, did it? Being excited about a kiss didn't mean I had to be more to Aspen than a friend.

It was such an obvious thing, and yet hearing him say it made me feel so much better. When the last bell rang and we put our weapons away, I actually felt like I had my head on straight. Keir just patted my back and turned me toward the door, only for us to find Bracken leaning against the wall on the other side.

"So?" he asked, looking at Keir.

Keir smiled at me. "Being new at a fae school is easier said than done. She's adjusting. We worked through it."

"Good," Bracken said, turning his attention on me. "If, at any time, you need help or advice, I am here to talk. I also know that sometimes bashing it out helps more. Keir has keys to the gym, and since he's a junior, he's allowed out here as late as he wants. I'll make sure both of you are cleared for after-hours use. If it's after curfew, Rain, you'll have to get permission from me or Liam first, ok?"

"Easy," I agreed.

"Sounds like I just got a promotion," Keir teased.

Bracken just chuckled. "If you truly want to be my teaching assistant next year, consider this your first student assignment. I'm thinking of your future."

"And hers," Keir said.

Bracken lifted one shoulder like he was almost dismissing that. "Need to get her caught up to the others. It's a good excuse."

Keir patted the man's shoulder. "Yep, it is. So you know, I'm walking Rain back to the dorms."

I followed beside him until we were out of Bracken's hearing. "Oh, you're just taking that onto yourself, huh? Because I might not make it back on my own?"

He grunted, clearly unimpressed. "So Bracken doesn't try to make me help clean. I'm using you, Rain. Get used to it."

"Good to know," I teased, grabbing my coat.

We each got dressed against the winter in silence. Keir looked back twice, checking on Bracken, and then we left. Yet the moment we were outside, he moved to walk at my shoulder again.

"Sounds like Bracken thinks you have potential, you know," he pointed out.

"Mhm." I had a feeling the man was just being nice. "Sounds like you plan on becoming the teacher's pet. Trying to get an easy A or something?"

"No," he assured me. "I'm honestly hoping to become a weapons instructor one day. The gym could hold twice as many classes, but most people focus on the magic instead of the combat.
